News flash!
I lived in the USVI for 4 years. Living there is nothing, and I mean nothing like visiting.
The schools are horrendous. The island is very poor, has a lively drug population,
and has very high crime. There is no natural water, you will buy bottled and shower
with rain water. You pray for rain, St croix can be very dry. Food is of poor quality
and very expensive. The majority of locals are black.

“ Seeing Weddings ”
Sep 25, 2010, 4:29 PM
I was wondering.................where are good spots to get to see weddings on St. Thomas? From an appropriate distance, of course, I don't mean in an intrusive way; I would never want to intrude on someone's wedding! For example, here in Maryland, we have Brookside Gardens, which are beautiful public gardens. It's not unusual to see bridal parties, wedding photographers, etc. as one walks around. I guess that's what I'm referring to. Thanks

And so you picked a house with a resident cat, because why? You want your husband or daughter to end up at the clinic?
Do you have a link to a newspaper article or anything about this? I sure hope not...the villa we're staying at has a "resident cat" and this is where they're boarding the cat during our stay since my husband and daughter are allergic.

All I can say is "WOW," as well.

Ok I visited St. Thomas in July for just one day. All I can say is WOW.
I had a great time and loved the crystal clear water. Me and my cousin
are thinking about moving .I've done some research but I've still got plenty
of questions I hope you guys can help me out with.....
1. How much does it cost to have a crate shipped to the Virgin Islands from the mainland?
2. I figure I'd like to live on St. Thomas or St Croix but what are the main differences between the two?
Is one island cheaper than the other?
Does one have better beaches?
3. Do cruise ships visit St. Croix also?
4. How do the snorkeling tours go? Im thinking of buying a boat and offering 2-3 hour snorkeling tours?
Is the market for that already saturated or is there room for more?
Do they make enough income to compensate for their expenses?
How much does it cost to dock your boat?
etc....

It would be a crate big enough to ship all of our clothes, some furniture like 2 beds,
desk, chairs, kayak, etc. i guess a pretty large crate. Not the size that a 18 wheeler carries.
Right now the main thing holding us back is finding the right boat.

Don't take this the wrong way, donkey, but -- Gather your expense estimates and then double them,
as you may well find you have to ship it all back, when you find out things here aren't what they look
like from a one-day vacation.... Starting a business down here is not like starting one stateside, either.
It might work out for you, but from what you've written, it sounds like you'll need to do a ton more
research if you're going to keep from making a very expensive mistake.

“ Ferries to Barbados ”
Sep 01, 2010, 7:06 AM
Hi.
I'm planning a transatlanic trip and my final destination would be USVI. The problem is that I'd like to come back to Europe in cheapest and fastest possible way, but there are no cheap flights from USVI to Europe. The only option is to fly from Barbados.
So - do you know if there are any ferries from USVI to Barbados/other big islands with big airports (except Puerto Rico)?

Whoopsie!
Barshinger wins by 3,000 votes; at-large absentee ballot is flawed
BY DANIEL SHEA, REPORTER, DAILY NEWS STAFF

Anyone voting on a Primary Election absentee ballot might have noticed a glaring error on the form under the “senator-at-large” section: There was no way to vote for candidate Sen. Craig Barshinger.
Barshinger was running against Ronnie Jones for the Democratic nomination, but there was no box to check next to his name on the absentee ballots.
“Bizarre,” Barshinger said. “Absolutely bizarre. Imagine having a ballot where they can’t even vote for you.”
The incumbent senator won the contest by a margin of about 3,000 votes, so the absentee ballots count will not change anything.
Supervisor of Elections John Abramson Jr. said the absentee ballot was an oversight.
“I looked at it,” Abramson said.
“It apparently got by us, and I apologize. I did the proofs, sent the ballot to St. Thomas, and I apologize.”

Yahoo, it's getting nasty! And, no, I did not write the last comment.
Cost of living
Where can I find such things as auto insurance costs and cell phone service? Not sure where to look.
Re: Cost of living
Is that your extent of COST OF LIVING? I would be more concerned about food, utility costs, lodging, cable, gas etc. Is that what you are looking for?
Re: Cost of living
The cost of auto insurance and cell phone service are the only things I could not find on the V.I. website. I just want to know how much for these two services. Example: My 12 year old Jeep is around $900.00 year for full coverage. Cell phone service in New Jersey is approx. $52.00 a month for 450 minutes with caller I.D. call waiting, long distance etc. for Verizon customers.
Re: Cost of living
If I wanted to be around rude sarcastic people I'll stay in New Jersey!!
Re: Cost of living
An option to consider

One of those worst-case scenario's.
Good Afternoon!
I'm doing my homework and starting my due diligence
to see if the island life is for me. Question- Can anyone
speak to how the recession is effecting the islands?
Regarding: unemployment rates, has tourism been down
over the last 3 years , is it still possible to hit the ground
running if you're diligent, and find a job relatively fast
once you get there? I'm a realist , so no
know pie in the sky scenario's please. Thanks!

For true!
While I am not a huge fan of Coral Bay, there is some seriously funny shit out there. The first time I saw the "NO" added to this sign, I wasn't able to get a picture of it. The next time I was in Coral Bay, the "NO" had been scraped off (you can see by the chipped paint). And on my most recent visit, the "NO" was back. I'll bet there are no more "N" and "O" stickers for sale at St. John Hardware.

Not a good idea.
Let's see. First, you could get yourself shot for picking someone's mangoes. Or, you could also pick something poisonous and die. And what's wrong with going to Nature's and PAYING for mangoes? I remember some rental guests a year ago, who thought it was a marvelous plan to climb a tree to pick some fruit. The husband spent the last night of their honeymoon at the clinic with three cracked ribs.
“ Where to find mango ”
Jun 13, 2010, 8:48 PM
We will be arriving in St John July 9 for our first time.
Can anyone tell me if Mango will still be in season and
where I might find some? We travel to the Caribbean
several times a year and never quite seem to be there
during mango season. I really want to pick my own
